OPHTHALMOLOGICAL
SOCIETY OF NIGERIA
FOUNDATION
AN
INITIATIVE TO PRESERVE AND RESTORE VISION FOR PEOPLE
THROUGHOUT NIGERIA
SEPTEMBER 2004
THE
OPHTHALMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF NIGERIA
The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria was founded in 1969 with the following
key objectives:
1.
To cultivate and promote the standard and practice of
Ophthalmology in Nigeria.
2.
To promote research in Ophthalmology and Vision.
3.
To promote and advance the pursuit of knowledge in the
science and technology of Ophthalmology in Nigeria.
4.
To take care of the blind and prevent blindness by
strategic design of applicable solutions to the root causes of
blindness.
5.
To establish cordial relationships with other scientific
associations all over the world in Ophthalmology and related fields.
6.
To organize workshops, seminars and conferences on all
matters relating to Ophthalmology
It can be seen from the above that the main thrust of the Ophthalmological
Society of Nigeria is the PREVENTION OF BLINDNESS.
MAGNITUDE
OF THE PROBLEM OF LOSS OF VISION
Every
5 seconds someone in the world becomes blind.
Every
1 minute a child becomes blind.
Worldwide,
at least 45 million persons are blind and 135 million persons are
severely visually impaired.
In
Nigeria about 1.5 million persons are blind and an estimated 4.5
million persons are severely visually impaired.
The
World Health Organization estimates that the number of blind and
visually impaired will double from 180 million to 360 million
persons by 2020 unless concerted action is taken.
As
much as 80% of this vision loss is avoidable — either preventable
or treatable —with currently available knowledge and technology.
THE
OBJECTIVES OF THE OSN FOUNDATION
More
than two-thirds of global blindness and visual
impairment is in the developing world, but programs to preserve and
restore vision can be improved in every continent and every country.
This is particularly true of Nigeria
There is no other
time in the history of human civilization when the
well being of each individual is inextricably linked to that
of every other. With the stark reality of increasing vision
impairment and blindness throughout the world, programs to preserve
and restore vision deserve concerted attention. All well meaning
people must join hands to achieve the goal of VISION 2020 – THE
RIGHT TO SIGHT. This is even more compelling in Nigeria where
everything is left for the government and it is obvious that the
government cannot cope.
Thus this unique
initiative to promote the best possible vision for every person in
Nigeria.
The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria
Foundation (OSN FOUNDATION) is established as a non-profit
organisation to
1. To support activities for
preservation and restoration of vision for people throughout
Nigeria.
2. To advance scientific ophthalmology.
3. To support ophthalmological education
and and training.
4. To improve the quality and relevance
of Ophthalmological training in Nigeria. Ophthalmologic education
and training are the cornerstones of activities to preserve and
restore vision worldwide.
5. To advocate quality eye care.
6. To promote research
in Ophthalmology and vision.
7. To promote advocacy
for preservation of vision.
The Foundation will work with the Ophthalmological Society
of Nigeria and cooperate with International bodies with similar
objectives to achieve these goals.
